We were very fortunate with the weather and as a result a good number of people attended. As well as 4 deportees with their families and friends , there was also Simone Meurig visiting from Bad Wurzach and 2 American ladies who are in the island tracing their family history.
St Helier Procureur Peter Pearce representing the Constable Simon Crowcroft, opened the ceremony. Juliette White read an extract from her mother’s diary recounting the family’s last minute preparations and panic before their deportation. Members of the committee then read pieces of prose and poetry on the subject of peace. Father Nick Barry, Rector of St Luke’s led us in prayers and Ursula Dingle laid the wreath at the foot of the plaque. We then made our way to the Radisson for afternoon tea where we were able to revive old friendships and acquaintances.
