Holocaust Memorial Day Monday 27th January 2025
Members of the Partnerscaft recently attended the ceremony at the Lighthouse Memorial outside the Maritime Museum in St Helier. It was especially poignant as this year marks the 80th anniversary of the liberation of Auschwitz – Birkenau Concentration Camp where it is believed , nearly 1million people perished.
The director of the Weiner Holocaust Memorial Library in London and the Dean of Jersey both gave very emotive speeches on the importance of remembrance and asked the question “What can I do?” The Dean then lit a candle of remembrance. We all moved outside , members of the Youth Theatre laid white roses on the names of those on the memorial and representatives from each group and organisation then laid wreaths . Roy Newton laid one on our behalf as a former deportee.
It was a very well attended ceremony in spite of the cold and showery weather and the number of wreaths increases every year which is extremely heartening to witness.
